Can a port be outside the box?

If a box design uses a 3 inch round port is it OK to have it stick out of the box a bit? Like say the port needs to be 7 in long but the box is only 7 in deep inside, can you have the tube stick out of the box by an inch?

Just keep in mind if the enclosure was designed with the port being internal, making some of it external will increase the net volume of the enclosure and probably lower the tuning a little bit.
