Can a 180oz (12lbs) magnet mess up a sub if it is mounted horizontal vs vertical? Can it affect the ohms?

I abused this sub for over 4 years. I thought it was my rca's or amp but i swapped them out and the same thing happens. I checked the ohms on each voice coil and they were reading 2.1ohm steady then before i put it back in i checked it again and it read 3.4ohm steady. BTW Hifonics olm2415 DVC 2ohm

Could it be that the motor shifted a little? Considering the 4 years I abused this sub mounted on back of box (facing the back). I am planning on redoing my trunk over the summer anyway but for future reference...

Oh thanks! Can you be anymore vague?

Clearly you drank it. Thanks!!
What else was he supposed to say??? Did you want reasons as to why it has no effect, thought you wanted to know what was wrong with the sub not what was ok with it....burnt coil from 4 years of abuse possibly???

The motor includes the voice coil (imo), so the motor technically does affect impedance. But what rabbit meant was the magnets, shifted or not, do not affect voice coil impedance. Just like the power wire you run back to your amplifier from the battery, the wire used to create the voice coil has an inherent resistance (based on cross sectional area of wire, length of wire, and material type). It is that wire resistance that creates the speaker's impedance. So obviously a shifted magnet will not affect the length, cross sectional area, or material type of the voice coil.

Perhaps you are using a different DMM or one is inaccurate? 12 pounds is NOT a heavy motor by a long shot.

If you want to know what a heavy motor is, take a look at the DC lvl6 lol
Speaking on behalf of this point, yes with many heavier motored subs, if you mount them horizontal, its a very good idea to build a motor support into the enclosure. Ive seen more than a couple frames cracked, or even broken in half, from supporting a heavy motor on its side while bouncing around in a car.

THIS ^^^

The motor on me SX shifted so bad over the weekend that it pinched the VC and locked the sub up.

normally when a motor shifts its the top plate and no matter which way its mounted the top plate is pulled to the pole, thus pinching the voice coil.

take the boot off ur sub and look for the top plate uneven to the top mag slug this will tell you.

re audio subs are very well known for this shifting. there was a huge batch of se/sx motored subs people got that were shifted bnib because they werent glued properly...
