Buying a plane ticket... When to do it?

How important is this trip and how old are you? Reason i ask is because if you're under 23 you can fly stand by and its a lot cheaper than buying a regular ticket. The way it works is that you check on the flight for that day when you want to go and see how many seats are available. If you think you can make it then you go to the airport and tell them you want a stand by ticket for that flight and they'll hook you up. Only thing is that price is only for 1 way and it works the same way when you're coming back.

My ticket to california is $110 each way after tax and everything. So $220 for a round flight ticket which is not bad at all! Only thing is that you can't be in a hurry like its not an important event because there is a slight chance you can't get on the flight until the next one.

dayum you are cheap lol

i value my time enough to not wait around an airport even longer just to find a better deal, instead i pay the fairest fee i can find and get the airport part of my trips over with as quickly as posible

My dad worked for TWA growing up and we flew all over the place going stand-by, never really had an issue I would say with probably 50 or so flights growing up we got 'bumped' maybe 4-5 times.

You can probably call the airline ahead of time some and see how the flights look to give you a better idea of if you are going to get on or not. The big issue is if you get stuck somewhere and have to stay overnight which in an expensive city a hotel room can kill you unless you just sleep in the airport which is probably what I would do.

only downside i see for standby tickets is that at that time of the month there will be TONS and TONS of people traveling. it being on a saturday would be worse and pretty sure there would be a pretty big list before him. instead of not being able to get one, i would rather pay for the security of having my seat and buy ahead of time as soon as possible.
