I'm moving to florida in December. I would like to purchase a gun to keep in my home for security. Can someone explain the process? to legally aquire a handgun?

Go to a gun store...Show them ID that you are 21 once you find the one you want. They will ask you to fill out a few sheets of paperwork, and they will run your history. Once that is complete, depending on the state, you either get the gun then or you wait 3 days to 2 weeks.

Yep...They will have everything you need and will even fax it over for you. You need nothing but ID and cash.

They pull everything. And its not the gun shop that approves or denies it. They just get back a yes or no. Its the govenrment, so anything in your record can be pulled if need be.

Through the public property act ( I think that is what its called), you can pull up your own record. IIRC its not online, you have to go into a goverment building.

I am not 100% on this, just something I have heard.

Anything and Everything especially criminal background iirc, and its a 7day waiting period for shotguns and I'm not 100% on the waiting period of handguns but I think it might be longer...

Nope, for shotguns and certain rilfes yes. But handguns are 21.

You have to be 21 through out the whole US?

**** I can go in the military and kill people with guns at 18, but you cant purchase one till your 21?

Every gun store told me it was 3 days.

And the age is 18 for rifles for the person that just posted.

and you can kill people at 18 in the army because you dont own that gun and dont have access to it whenever you want.

3 days for what, handgun? When I bought my shotgun I had to wait 7...

yeah 3 days for a handgun. never asked about a rifle or a shotgun.

you will need

1. Government issued photo ID.. drivers license is best, must be correct, and not expired

2. must have a physical address, on either the photo ID, or through another government issued document.. tax ticket, voters registration, etc.. no power bills or anything of that nature

3. you must fill out ATF form 4473. you must fill it out correctly, and answer the questions in section 11 honestly. if the answered to those questions do not automatically disqualify you.. the dealer will call NICS, and in Florida, the state police for your background check. the initital check searches for reasons that you cannot own a firearm. it nothing flags.. the dealer gets a proceed.. and will continue with the transaction.. if you get flagged, you go into either delay, to perform further analysis, or you get denied.. denied means no guns.. ever.. unless you submit an appeal..

florida has a mandatory 3 day wait on handguns.. so if nics doesn't go 'you ****' you come back and buy your handgun..

word of advice... take the entire firearms purchase dead serious.. listen to the instructions given, follow the directions on the 4473 perfectly.. I've stopped many sales because people didn't want to listen, or acted as if they shouldn't have a gun..

the dealer can stop the transaction on his own accord, regardless if nics gives a proceed.. and if you give him any inclanation you're being dishonest, he'll shut it down..

Mandatory fine for incorrectly doing a gun sale is $25000, and possible prosecution.. ATF is very hard to deal with..
