BTL vs. MT

i got this some where else... i didn't say this... but just some info

I spend a lot of time on termlab, and over there plenty of people have compared the DMX to the MT. In terms of output they are neck and neck. It is really a toss up to which one will get better. But for the money most people will agree the DMX is a better subs. The MT's were great when you could get them in the $400-500 range, but now that prices are way up, it just isn't worth it.

And after looking over the specs on the BTL that were available, it sounds like it isn't quite at the level that the MT was at. I am sure it will still get loud, but once you add upgrades and do all that, it still most likely won't have the output that the MT's had.

That is just why I think the DMX is a better SPL sub for the money.

This is going to depend a lot on how you intend on using either sub. If it is for pure SPL, you dont want full cooling and all the options on the BTL. Scott has recommended that for pure burps you want the 2mag version with p-chamfer and the SPL option for a tighter gap. The BTL and the MT are very closely related. I do think with all the options available, for a daily setup the BTL would be a overall better choice. The subs are so closely related and there are to many variables to pick which one would be louder. It would be nice if someone has both and could do a direct drop in test just for the hell of it. IMO The BTL is a better overall woofer because they can be custom designed for any use.

I never metered my BTL so this isnt really a good comparison. It's just a opinion by using my hearing and feeling.

So here's what Im working with.

SUBS:

Dual 2 ohm 18" FI BTL Fully Loaded

Dual 1 ohm 18" RE Audio MT

AMP:

Rockford Fosgate t30001bd

2 ohm - 2800rms

1 ohm - 3800rms

BOX:

7 cuft tuned to 32hz with 100sq.in. of port.

MT PROS:

The MT hits the lows extremly well, much better then the BTL ever did. It gets loud and my blazer flex's more on a few songs because the lows are hitting with much more authority. 30-35hz is amazing!

MT CONS:

Even with the sub wired at 2ohm getting 2800rms it doesnt seem to handle the power near as weel as the Fully Loaded BTL did. On 40hz burps it doesnt seem like it has the SPL potential like the BTL did even if I was to feed it more power.

BTL PROS:

It's alot louder then the MT, loud enough to cause pain in the ears when burping at 40hz. It handles the power much better. Very loud 35-40hz range.

BTL CONS:

Doesn't hit the lows as well as the MT.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks!

The BTL is the better option as it allows for the customization necessary to do what you wish it to do. The MT has a much tighter gap than the daily BTL so in that situation, it might make for a little more SPL, especially if you start adding cooling options to the BTL and take even more steel out of the motor. But...if you go with an SPL BTL, add 3rd magnet and pole chamfer, you'll likely be scoring higher than you would with the MT. Naturally, enclosure and listening environment have pretty big effect on your results.

I mean honestly, if you design sub A, would you really make a sub B (the flagship of your new company) with less potential than your first sub?

what would be an ideal setup for an 18" MT for a looouud *** daily driver on 2500-3000rms?
give it 7.5 cubes tuned 32-35hz ~100 sq inches of port. that's about what my MT was in off 3000w... sounded great... edit: i just looked at the plans for my old box and it was 8 cubes after port displacement.

can't say i've ever really seen an objective comparison between the two drivers so i'd say go with the one that you think has the cooler dust cap logo //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

Well the BTL and MT have good low end but both do rather poorly spl-wise in street class…

wasnt steve meade louder with the MT's than with the BTL's?
he would have had to get metered for anyone to know that. and if you ask he will probably not say that either was louder. I have heard also that MTs get lower and BTLs get louder. The question here, being that both drivers are so similar, is price. the BTL fully loaded is less than half the price of a new MT. Another pro for the BTL is that Scott is available most of the time on forums to answer quesitons and if you get the Fi you don't have to end up on the phone with Holly at US Amps
