Bottoming out? Clipping?

can someone describe these sounds with video, sound clips, or even words the best you can?

when i turn my sub gain up too much, i start to hear this (not too loud) crackling noise, like something inside the cone is shaking around or something, and of course this sounds bad so i turn it back down.

is that bottoming out, clipping, or something else?

setting my gains by ear...i have equalizer on flat, bass boost off, head unit volume 40/62. after i set it at a notch back from what SOUNDS like something bad, i put the equalizer on how i like it, and make sure not to turn it up past 40.

Sounds like you did the right thing...

Bottoming out the coil is a much louder noise, you'd definitely know something was wrong //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

i just read another post in the General forum where a guy has some crackling going on in his components, he was told to check the grounds.

could this be it also, or is it probably just because i was giving it too much power? does clipping sound like a crackling or popping noise?

i have a 12" SD2.5 running off a PGx600.1...bought my whole system thinking i wouldn't want more bass....now that I have it in, it sounds real nice, but i'm kind of wishing i got 2k power and an HD3. later hopefully.

Subs usually arent treated the same way as mids/highs in troubleshooting. More than likely it is just distorting due to clipping. Bottoming out is LOUD. Ive done it to a few junk speakers to kill em. Believe me, youll KNOW when you bottom out!

2.5 cu. ft. tuned to approx. 37-38 hz. don't know EXACTLY, but used some calculators to check because i bought this box from someone and it used to be tuned to 30 hz. I broke down one of the port walls to get the tuning I wanted.

dj from audioque said it would be okay to do this, except that it might result in port noise because my port area was already small for the sub. this did not happen though, so i am assuming everything with my box is fine.

don't get me wrong. it sounds sick as hell. improved the music a lot, makes quarters on my trunk dance, and still gives a good back massage to the people in the back.
