Need your help! I installed a alpine mrv-500 rms amp with a single type S sub, a few hours later it started rattling. took it out and looks like a ball of copper wire under the magnet..what went wrong?

now what should i replace it with?

08 crew cab GMC

single 12in box .96 air 6 1/2 depth

alpine 500 rms @ 2omhs

most the volume was up is halfway. I had not set the gain yet, it was at factory setting which I think was halfway. thought it would be safe to run untill i had more time to adjust it.

I believe I have the same Sub-Amp as you, I just finally purchased a Sundown SA-10 DVC 4 Ohm. Quite a few people on this forum a year or two ago recommended this sub for me, so finally I'm getting one. Looking forward to hearing it.

might want to rent out an oscilloscope and set the gains and head unit correctly.

here's a general guide line

For the Head unit LPF to 80, sub level close to max, Bass/bass boost at 0, Equalization at flat

For the amp, have LPF at 80, subsonic filter at 20-30, bass boost all the way down

you should check out whats the highest volume your head unit can go up to without distorting/clipping on the oscope then use a 50 hz test tone to set amp gains make sure its clean on oscilloscope. I dont see why a 500 rms alpine type S would blow from its rated power without some heavy clipping issues. I would make sure you set things right before throwing that Sundown in with the same settings. They are tough subs but any sub is susceptible to clipping.

Thanks for the tips jeffdachef. I really think the sub I got was bad out of the box. I turn it up half way and let it distort for maybe ten seconds. I'm going to make sure I get the amp set right with this speaker before I crank it. Lol
