race cars have large tires becuse of traction problems, not cause it makes them go faster... having so much of contact patch with such large tires...wow... your speedo might show you're going at 40, but that reading would be way off...
It would be very obvious for a 1.6 liter car that's originally fit with a 14" rim to upgrade to a 16" or 17"... the acceleration would feel very sluggish. THat's what happened with my first rust bucket, from a standard 13" 5.5J to 16" 8J (if I remember correctly), and even with so-called performance exhausts, cams, twin carbs, air filter and port-posihing, it was still sluggish.Originally posted by BonusBobo Would it really affect it that much, though? I guess with powerful cars like a Corvette, if you were to fit in a 22", you wouldn't really feel much UNTIL you try racing with a same spec corvette with small diameter rims. You WILL be left behind to eat his dust.
The readout difference in speed would very greatly too.
The diameter of the wheel really has nothing to do with your speed as long as it isnt wayy oversized (like a 22" wheel on a corvette). If you have a factory 16" wheel with a 225/60R16 tire on it and upgrade to 18" wheels with a 245/45R18 tires there will be no difference because the overall diameter is the same...bigger wheel, smaller tire. Now I can understand where putting some big heavy chrome wheels on a sportscar might slow it down a little, but thats about it.
