best amp/hu tuning method

Heres a question im having a hard time figuring out. on a setup with a highs amp. and a bass amp. is it best to turn all the high, mid, and bass settings all the way down in the head unit, and then tune with the gain on the amps. or is it best to mix the equilizer of the head unit and the amp gain together...?

They say leave the HU at 0, or everything flat, and turn the volume up, say 3/4, then adjust your gains and settings on the amps.
