Best amp for $250 for my needs?

Ironically Massive, i have experience with both so i'll give you my full experience with both the Opti 500x2 and Taramp's.

I actually still have the Opti 500x2. It was driving 4 PWX8s 4ohms, so each channel on the Opti was 2ohm nominal.

Since we, as users, do not "number chase" watts on mids/highs amps, when the amplifier was setup, it was set via Dmm with NO load to 38vAC which should be correct.

I ran it like this for about 2-3 months. After a while, i noticed the PWX8s never got warm.. EVER..

So, i decided to amp the output some.

While playing a heavy dynamic song, something heavy rock, i was measuring realtime AC output on the amp.

I was only getting ~23vAC out during music max average.

So, while it was playing same song, i cranked the gain up more til it hit around 37vAC while playing.

The output was VERY loud now.

To compensate, i set the active x-over to bandpass the 8s from 350hz - 3.2khz

Now, while i did leave it like this for the rest of the install and the 8s never had a problem thermally, the amplifier DID!

No matter if i were playing rap or Pink Floyd, with the gain in the position it was to achieve that active rail voltage, it took only 13-15 minutes before it would go into thermal protect.

It would do this throughout the summer and it was not recessed at all. Plenty of open room around it.

It was a let down from there.

You can talk to anybody though who has used the DSP line from Taramp's. Clearly put, like what popwarhomie says, use the amplifier on mids and set the Anti-clipping limiter on it. You can go crazy on the volume however you want without thermal worry, //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif That and guaranteed clarity of sound.

Yes, the amplifiers cost more because of onboard DSP but the features outweigh the cost.

Interesting. Right now i have my opti 250x4 running 4 10s, 4 6.5s and it gets real hot but has never shut off in the 5 years of owning it. And your saying the taramps 1600.2 was better then the opti since you used both? I'm really in the fence about which way To go.. And is that taramps 1600.2 on Amazon for $274 a legit retailer and brand new amp?

I can't say which one puts out more power. I never actually measured either.

You have to remember though, The Taramp's ideally should be putting out more power. It's Class D and higher impedance generally retains higher output power anyway over other chinese/korean designs.

Basically, between the two, i never had to worry about heat whether to shut down or simply just to say.. hey, this amp is hot but still working. The DSP is just fine. Nothing magical about it, it just works as it should.

I'm not necessarily saying out of all 7,000 amps out there, get the DSP line, i was more beating down on the Opti. Of course, it was probably clipping like hell because of how i reset the gain during play but if it was clipping to hell (which i still assume it had to be), i never had thermal issues nor acoustical issues leading to audible distortion.

Like you say though, i probably never would have had thermal issues either if i never reset the gain the way i did later on because i never had the issue prior to doing that.. but at the same time... It's still not fair to be overheating as often as it was and never popping fuses... To me, that's failure in R&D when doing torture testing.

Does the taramp run at 15.2 voltage cold morning and 14.8v hot ? I thought I heard before they don't like high voltage... I have a ton of alt power and voltage is gunna stay up there.

No, not the DSPs. They are still limited to not wanting to be over 14.4v loaded down unless you turn the volume down some to compensate for output power.

The only amplifier they have that is designed for higher 12v output is this new hd8000 we have here we are about to start testing.

Supposedly, it's 14.4v limit has been raised to 15.0v operable.. but i know that's not going to fit your needs.

Perhaps you can look at Lanzar next largest Opti amp and get that?

I can't think of a brand right now that makes high power for less money than Lanzar either..

We are working with a new Chinese company but they are staying under the 1000w limit and focusing on quality.. so i can't recommend them to you either.

what about massive audio? Pay no attention to model numbers, make sure you look at power ratings instead. See if any of their amps fit your needs? I do not think they are too expensive.

Yes. I run 15.3 every morning and 14.8 hot. The DSP and HD line have no issues. The taramps TS line would voltage protect over 15.2 though.

They'll operate yes. But depending on actual output power.. i wouldnt want to suggest something that may have more potential to fail.

IE- Our personal repair tech has now had to upgrade a few HD10000s because users able to run them below 2ohm reactive long enough to blow the fets in them and this is below 14v.

we have submitted technical documentation to overseeing engineering manager for inspection in hopes later in the 2016 year, many things get addressed.

This is all from running subwoofers on them and going stupid crazy with the output on clipping etc..

Yes, it's overworking them but we are still trying to get them to upgrade the internals before they leave Brazil.

Thanks to a couple people who know the technical details of what's going on inside, we can help push the issue.

But i'll shut up now about that. The amplifiers do fine within reason.. we are just trying to expand the reason for more common sense purposes.
