Bass knob or HU Bass boost?

I have a bass knob on my JL 1000/1 and when I set my gains I set them with the bass boost knob all the way up so it won't clip the signal at full tilt. The bass boost on my HU is always at 0, I never raise it or lower it I always use the bass knob.

But I was just wondering one thing cuz I know a lot of people don't reccommend bass knobs. My sub pounds real low and shakes the hell out of my car, but higher frequency bass tones just don't get loud on my sub. I have it Low passed at around 90 with a 12 db slope.

Should I not be using a bass knob and just use the boost on my HU? Cuz doesn't the bass knob only boost that one certain frequency? Mines set at around 48 or 50 on the 1000/1.

If I use the bass boost on my HU, does that boost all frequencies?

Sorry for the jumble of questions, just wanna get this cleared up:crazy:

Such a wise and typical answer on this forum. Thanks bri487!!!! You really helped me out, I know exactly what to do now!!! ****in idiot. Anyways I guess I'll just go out and **** around with it, but anyone who has some experience with this and knows what works best allready feel free to chime in with a better answer then bri487

wow

In my previous setup I had the bass knob hooked up. It wasnt a boost at any certain frequency though, it more or less felt like a separate gains knob (dare I say volume, lol ). I could turn the sub on only to 10-15% of its total output, or crank it upward to 100%

Most of the time I left in between 25-40% because it was more then enough.

As for the HU's bass setting, I had no choice but to increase it to around +3 because at 0 the frontstage felt like it had no bass at all. It was anoying to say the least.

On mine the only reason i have my BB on at all is for the SSF and the BB is part of the 3 way group... If i were you id keep the boost less than 4, set ur gain properly and use ur non fad/ sub control .. My BB is at 0 , the gain is about 3/8 ( i have a eclipse 8443 zhu) And all i use is my non fade, .. It sounds 10x cleaner and gets just as loud as tweaking everything up...

Bass Boost FTL

It's starting to sound better, there's just so many options on how to set everything though so I really appreciate all the helpful replies. I'm gonna be doing this all day lol

I forgot to mention that one of the reasons I'm asking this is cuz my 2500d should be comin in soon and the 1000/1 will be leaving and I'm trying to figure out if I should buy a bass knob for the 2500d or just leave it out of the picture.

i would leave out the bass knob. It just confuses you. Why don't you turn off bass boost on both the HU and the amp, take out the bass knob and adjust the gain by the DMM from there... See how it sounds and then tell us. Anytime you change a setting after using the DMM, it may affect the voltage.

So if I turn off all the boosts and remove the knob and then set the gains, should I always leave teh bass boost on the amp at 0 or adjust that to my liking?

you can adjust it to your liking, but then when you use your DMM to do the gains, it's gonna be lower because you have bass boost on. So it evens out. Do some testing, and see what you come up with...
