bass gets louder when the trunk is open

i recently bought a 07 lucerne and installed a new hu a jvc, old crunch gpv1000.1 and 2 12" sonys, plus a SSL crossover. i noticed off the bat the bass wasnt hittin like it did in my 99 taurus. no big deal i chalked it up to the new trunk size and new acoustics. it sounds clean and all just not as punchy. but then i opened the trunk from the inside and i noticed distinct and measurable increase in the bass. not something i would attribute readily to just a change in the trunk space w the trunk lid open. it sounds electrical... im not really sure how else to explain it. its just to great of a change in sound. it starts sounding like it used to in the taurus. now i remember one time i installed a system that hummed when the the trunk was opened, it boiled down to a bad ground, i wonder if this is similisr. i will check to see if there is a visible difference in excursion when the trunk open tommorrow. anyone ever come across this before?

yep, cancellation at work. sound leaving the subs travels in all directions. when it hits a hard surface it reflects back. when those reflections are 1/4 wavelength away, the returning sound is 1/2 wavelength delayed and you get pure cancellation. anything else is partial cancellation.

fire rear close to the rear and the trunk lid reflection will be close enough to not cause cancellation in sub frequencies.

or fire forward and seal the front baffle off at the opening.

in general, you want to rear- and/or corner-load the sub and port.

not trying to thread jack but my buddy had a similar issue with his 01 tarus but we had 2 12s ported facing rear and once you closed the trunk you could barly hear the bass. open trunk and it was niceee. i though maybe it was box rise but other trunk systems set up similarly didnt do this?

depends how far rear. most push them to the back of the rear seat - which means you have a delay for the reflection. rear meaning close to the rear of the vehicle is different than rear at the back seats.
