Bass Controls on HU clipping?

When setting gains I know you're supposed to have all bass settings on 0, but I have a alpine 9883 head unit with a sub control that goes 0-15. I've been told this is just attenuation and doesn't affect how the amp will clip, but that doesn't sound right to me

Its attenuation. It basically is a voltage control. For full voltage at the RCA's you will want it at 15 and tune accordingly.

Its the same with my 9887. However the 9887 has been O Scoped and doesnt send out a clipped signal at full attenuation and at full volume through RCA's. I havent read anything about how clean the speaker outputs are though. Alpine has it internally limited. Your HU may be similar.
