Bass Controls Help?

Okay I have never posted on this forum before, but I have spent hours and hours researching different topics and ideas. One I just can't figure out or I'm completely confused on the bass settings on the head unit and amp. I know how to set the gain on the amp so it wont clip, and I know your not suppose to mess with the bass boost on the amp right? Your just suppose to leave it turned down correct? But what about the bass on the hu are you not suppose to turn that up either? Thats what I don't get. I hear people say that your not suppose to mess with the bass setting on the hu or something because you might distort and clip you sub I'm so confused can somebody help explain this to me I have not found any post about this topic. It just doesnt make sense because if you cant turn up the base on the hu then how are you ever suppose to get any base. Oh and for future reference I have a kenwood Kac-x889 so I wont have to worry about distorting the highs. thanks for any help

Nevermind i figured it out, I just a couple more questions I have a ed 9.1 powering a pioneer premiere TS-W3002SPL I figured I needed to set the gain at about 34.6 volts, so thats what I set it at, but the gain is about 3/4 the way up does that sound right or is that to high and if so what am I doing wrong? Also I its just beating the crap of my electrical system battery gauge bounces around more then the sub and the lights dim horribly. I had the alt rewound to 200 amps does that sound right. Come on people help me out please I don't think my questions are to out of line.

okay yes I agree its a great amp but I dont think I'm using it to its full potential
