bass boost

I set up my friends system 2 solo baric l5 12"s on a hifonics brutus ran at 1 ohm, and when the gain was up 3/4 of the way it wasn't hitting like it should have. I turned the gain to half way and turned the bass boost up and after it got past a certain part around 5/8s of the way it just started hitting like crazy and it sounded good so i left it like this. i dont hear any distortion or clipping. is this ok to do?

If it's not clipping and you like the sound, I see no reason to change it ...
agreed, soem people are so anti-boost its crazy. if i was that crazy id buy a 50k watt amp and turn it all the way down so id be sure not to distort and get extremely precise SQ :p

once you get past half it will seem to be hitting deeper soemtimes but its usually a falsified sound and close up its distorty. play it how you like it, some like boost, some dont. your call

i was about to post a thread about this exact topic. if the bass boost was so bad why do amp makers put them on the amp in the first place. my subs hit so much harder with the bass boost on. and i dont think they are distorting either.

I just put in a Kicker 600.1 and one L7 solo baric 12" in his integra and without bass boost, there is almost no bass. Right now, I think his gains are almost maxed with the remote bass almost maxed too. On his Alpine 9807, the subwoofer level is at +11, I think. It sounds pretty good now.

On my system, I set the bass boost to 0 but I think I'll play around with the settings tomorrow, trying out boost higher with my gains lower. If I turn on boost now with my current settings, the bass will be a lot, but it's the loose kind of bass that I don't really like. I got a Hifonics ZX 7500 and 2 Diamond Audio M3s.

But yeah, it's weird. Without bass boost, my cousin gets no bass at low volumes. Comparing the same songs, his L7 plays a lot of lower frequencies that only go "bump bump" in my car while it goes "boom boom" in his. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif I'll have to change that. Hahaha.

Well, I don't really know how to hook up an O-scope, but once you get it hooked up, it shows the signal on the screen. Basically, you run a sine wave and if it shows up as a nice rounded signal, that's good, you're not clipping. If the tops of the waves are cut off or squarish, then you're clipping.
Yeah, what he said. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif If the tops of the waves are squarish, then isn't there still a signal, which means bass? Just wondering. . .

I just started to dialed in some boost on my amp. I was running without it for awhile now and really not getting alot of bass output. Just like many of you said, dial in some boost and the bass sound so much better.

I also play with the Q setting, I think the level of bass boost and Q setting have to somehow correlate to get a good sound.
