bass boost, at all?

No. Especially if you've got an underpowered system, because most people will try to compensate for lack of power with bass boost, and the amp will clip and destroy the sub(s).

Clipping is distortion. It happens when an amp is working too hard. It cuts the top and bottom end off of the music being played iirc.

When an amp sends a clipped signal to a sub, the sub's voicecoil will heat up, eventually leading to a blown sub.

X2, can also kill the amp as well.
