Bandwidth (Q)?

I have a Kicker SX1250.1 amp. However there is a setting which I have no clue what it affects. The amplifier has a setting called Bandwidth where you adjust the "Q" in .5 increments from .5 to 10. The only thing the manual tells me is that a lower "Q" effects frequencies closest to the center frequency while a higher "Q" does not effect them as much, but it doesn't tell me how it effects them. What does turning down the "Q" and turning up the "Q" do?

Sounds like a control for the bass boost...so for example, if you're boosting a certain frequency, turning the Q higher would narrow the range of frequencies boosted, while a lower Q value would provide a broader peak from center.

Since bass boost sucks anyway, I wouldn't use it.

Thanks. I don't use my bass boost so I guess I should just leave the Q alone. I've read too many things on how bad bass boost is to ever even think of using it.

the title is pretty close, Q = Bandwidth / CenterFrequency.

(center frequency is geometric, not arithmetic)

eg, a filter with a Q of 1, centered at 100hz, would mainly affect 61.8hz - 161.8hz. note that this is 100hz of bandwidth (1 * 100hz = Q * Fc), and that 100hz is the geometric mean (61.8 * 161.8 = 100 * 100). a Q of 10 would mean only 10hz around 100hz are primarily affected (95.1hz to 105.1hz)

since your HU has feasible Q values, the "Q" might actually refer to Q. Simpler HUs often have Q as a "1 2 or 3", where 1,2, and 3 are settings and not literal values for Q.

how do u like ur amp and at what load are u using it? I love the SX amps from kicker and i have two of them aswell one is a sx900.4 and the other is sx600.2 wich i use for two 12" boston g5 and belive it or not with 275 rms each it gets very loud. But i could be pushing 450 to each according to boston not that i really need it louder but there might be times //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif. I was just wondering of the quality of a mono amp especially at 1ohm load and the lower damping factor how the subs sound... im very picky on SQ and dont like muddy bass but loud yes //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

thanx for your input

I'm running the SX1250.1 at 1ohm to my 2 Polk SR124-DVC subwoofers. I love it. Very sturdy, powerful (mine came rated at 1410watts), looks great, and has a ton of features to play around with while at the same time being user friendly. I am really impressed with it. The SQ is amazing but the subs I bought were meant for SQ. My bass is nice and clean, not muddy at all. I'm still tinkering with it so I can get everything exactly the way I like it. Haven't done any exploring of the Kompressor feature so I'll probably play with that next. I don't think I could have picked a better amp.

i have two boston acoustics G5 wich are very SQ oriented but hit very hard. I was just concert on the damping factor of the amp at 1ohm load but since u are saying the opposite i might just look into upgrading. and yea i really think its one of the best amps out there ...

I got mine from onlinecarstereo.com and it seemed like a pretty good deal. I don't know how much longer they will be out though seeing as Kicker just removed the SX series off of there website as of today or yesterday.
