Balisong Knives

why do you want a butterfly? they aren't very practical for actual use, although they are fun to play with. but hell, you can play with a 20 dollar butterfly.

but if you must have one, i'm gonna say splurge on the benchmade. you will absolutely not regret it. i have no less than 5 benchmades, although they're all folders and all get carried and used. an m2 710hs, a griptillian, a doug ritter s30v mini griptillian, a limited edition 705d2 and a limited edition 707-600 with d2. i mostly carry the 707, i love that thing.

on a side note, for sharpening purposes, i HIGHLY recommend the edgepro. i can take a knife from dangerously dull to hair popping (not shaving, but splitting) sharp in about 10-15 minutes.

With knives you get what you pay for. Balisongs are like autos, they sell on the cool factor so many companies make substandard products that look the part but don't last. There's nothing wrong with a $20 switchblade or bali if you just want something to play with, but you won't get a reliable working knife.
For solid, reputable companies producing balisongs, check out Benchmade, Spyderco and Microtech. They are somewhat limited in production as balisongs aren't that popular in that price range and some states are not friendly to them legally.

If I were looking for an heirloom or if I had the cash:

This site has some interesting designs, particularly if the local laws limit the length of blade you can carry. They are carbon steel blades as well:

A good place for information on the latest releases. Check out the balisong index near the top:
