DJ (the owner of AQ) is the father of Jassa (owner of DD).... The HDC3 is assembled in China, the aluminum coils are assembled at DD. All AQ products are warehoused and packaged at DD and shipped from DD. All warranty work is done at DD. The difference between an AQ HDC3 and a DD 9500 is the AQ is built in China and it does not have as many options as the DD and it does not have as much cooling as the 9500. Same size coil (AQ uses a Chinese coil except the aluminum is US and DD uses a US coil), same size magnets, same size top plate (DD has cooling channels in the top plate and down the T-Yoke and it is crossed drilled through the t-yoke) The AQ only has a vented t-yoke and the top of the t-yoke is cupped for better cooling. As a result of the extra cooling in the motor, the DD 9500 will handle more power than the AQ with the copper voice coil BUT, they are pretty close with the aluminum coil. (Basically you are paying dealer price on the AQ if it was not dealer direct only).......

Something I think is real funny is as soon as AudioQue goes to China to be built. You see several companies come out with SPL drivers that are all built by the same company that builds the AQ driver in China.

I'm not sure, i don't have experience, but i believe a little bit of both from looking at and testing a lot of chinese products.

All of the above !!!! Average wage at a Chinese speaker factory is $3.00 per day. It cost about $4.50 to eat a meal at a McDonalds in China. So, that is a day and a half worth of wages to eat one meal... Plus the DD's really are not that bad depending on the dealer..

Well with DD you are already paying 1 more markup because of the dealer, if it werent for that the price difference wouldnt be so extravagant

That about sums it up, I just wish aq made the composite cones like dd does..

Yea I think it was discussed before, that you gotta pay these Chinese build houses extra so you have exclusive rights to a particular design, otherwise you end up where we are now, other companies offering drivers that look very similar.

um, I've been to the hdc3 page and 9500 series page and the 9500 series claims to have a motor much larger than the HDC3, by like 170 oz.

Well, the AQ has a mounting depth of 7.625" on the 10" HDC3 and a width of 8.7" on the magnets (magnet O.D. of 220mm) and the magnet weight is 340 Oz.

DD 9510 has a mounting depth of 7.625" (and this is with the same basket) and a motor width of 9.3125" (this is with the magnet boot on) and they say that they have 406 Oz magnets...... The O.D. of the magnets on the 9500 is 220mm....

The DD 9500 is clamied to have 66Oz. more on the magnet over the AQ. They have the same mounting depth and the motors are the same width (counting for the magnet boot and all) the only difference on the magnet weight could be on the I.D. since I could only check this by taking each motor apart and I have not done that. Both have the same size voice coil and the 9500 has an RMS rating of 1,500 watts and the HDC3 is 1,000 watts... Both are underrated and the DD has more cooling in the motor. I am not saying they are the same but, they are pretty close like a Toyota and a Lexus I guess ??
