A 58-year-old disabled Camden man said he was surprised to learn that his Supplemental Security Income payments from the federal government will be cut by $980 because he won a $1,000 prize from Arkansas' lottery.
John E. Dodds won $1,000 with a scratch-off ticket purchased Dec. 7 at a convenience store in Camden. After filing an unearned income statement with the Social Security Administration, he received a letter the day after Christmas informing him that his Supplemental Security Income payments will be reduced by $980 this year. He was allowed $20 as a "general exclusion" under federal law.
A spokeswoman for the Social Security Administration says federal officials explain to applicants for Supplemental Security Income that those payments could be reduced if they receive other income.
