...a family member routinely commits a crime, you are a cop, and you don't report the family member? But let's say if that was ANYONE not of your family, you'd bust their *** quick. Are you crooked?

"Yeah, you're a cop, it's your obligation to report that family member," is the response I think people would normally say. But just think if you were that cop & that family member means a lot to you, let's say you raised him, he's had a lot of health problems, scenario after scenario, etc...

Are you still crooked?

yeah of course you are...you swore to uphold the law and you are shirking your duties. Having said that....crooked is the only kind of cop to be //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

Would you view someone who used there work benefits such as discounts to help out friends or family, crooked?

To me, that is all the officer is doing. But then again, it depends on the severity of the crime. I think you let some things go, some things you consult them about and tell them that you can't keep turning your head, and then other things you have to report.

5. Yes.

4. If someone was hurt Yes. If not, you seriously talk it over with the individual and tell them you'll have to report them next time

3. No, but you have a talk with them. You never report it. But you don't encourage it

2. No.

1. No.

wrong is wrong. Trying to tell yourself anything else is just self justification. I hate people who try to justify their behavior as if sticking to some moral code...when in reality they are just lying to themselves and others. It doesn't matter if its murder or stealing a stick of gum. If the cop doesn't report it he is shirking his duties and wrong. Its so much better to just be honest..say i know its wrong but i do it any ways..fck you //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

I actually know someone who is sitting in prison right now for killing a cop. He was accused of selling weed, his brother was a sheriff. The cops heard his brother was staying with him in the house where drugs were being sold. They raided, and this guy i know shot and killed a cop in the raid.

Report or no:
1. Identity Theft

2. Insurance Fraud

3. Selling drugs

4. Robbery

5. Murderer
Depends on the crime for me and how strongly I feel about it being a crime.

1. No, have a talk with them and try make them stop.

2. No, same thing.

3. No, same thing.

4. No, same thing.

5. Yes, they aren't stable.

I see where your coming from, but everyone does have their own sense of ethics. Your view just happens to be black and white favoring a given society's laws.

I guess it depends a lot also on the person you are reporting, their character, how these crimes came to be, etc. If the person is a total jerk-off and deserves it, yeah I would report them. If that person is generally someone who I believe is good-natured, I'd have a hard time reporting him.

EDIT: I might have misread you, I'm not sure if you favor society's laws... I just figured that since you used the word "wrong" when referring to the crooked cop's actions. I do agree with you that it DOES make you a crooked cop. I just don't believe thats always necessarily "wrong." So my bad.. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

1. I'd give him/her 2 days to make things right or in jail you go....family or not. I know someone who has been a victim of identity theft and 2 years later he is still having credit problems because of it.

2. Insurance companies fuck US all the time but its still against the law and I couldn't look away for too long.

3. I'd give an ultimatum. STOP or go to jail. PERIOD

4. If it was unarmed robberty then they would get this one chance. But of course it depends on the severity.

5. I'd take them to jail myself. NO excuse for taking someones life if its not in self defense.

What it comes down to is if I were a cop and a friend or family member does any of these crimes they would get the benefit of the doubt ONE time.(with the exception of murder that is) If they're going to put me in a situation where they know I'm a cop but continue to break the law assuming I will look the other way is ridiculous and therefore they're asking me to break the law when I am being paid with tax payer money to uphold it. Being a crooked cop is a very touchy subject and there are alot of ways to look at it but withholding evidence or looking the other way is in fact illegal and this cop you speak of is putting himself in a position to go from upholding the law to being NAILED for breaking it.

Instead of bending what i consider to be right or wrong in order to fit my actions i recognize what is wrong in my actions and accept it for what it is. If you are a cop, and shirk your duties, you are corrupt and guilty of nepotism. Thats just how i see it.

I think we can ALL agree that we don't really know how we would react unless we were in fact put into that situation. Like I said before, if they're expecting me to look the other way then they're asking me to break the law as well. No way I'm going to jail for someone who could care less about my well being.
