My parents used to blow everything out of proportion when it came to acting up in school. It didn't matter what I did, if they had to hear about it from the school there was hell to pay. Looking back years later it still doesn't make any sense.

It really sounds like the father is trying everything he can to keep this family together. He is being strightforward because the mother is just about to lose her sanity and he does not have the luxury of coddling the child any longer.
