All alternators do close to the same thing.
Just adding on with the stock shouldn't be hard. Taking a different alt and trying to incorporate it into the stock place is where you run into problems. Since you said you are putting it into a late 80s car, you probably won't have to make it work with a computer but I am not familiar with that car.
If you can make the alt spin and keep it regulated I don't see you having many problems.
