I know the AQ web site says they can handle 500~600 rms. Im thinking about running just one powered by a AQ1200d at 2ohms which is 870 rms. is this safe?

No it won't. 870 is fine, but don't go any higher than that. The 1200d was made for the sdc2.5 series. I'm running mine at 870w right now, and it's been fine.

We ran one in 3.5 at 34 off a hifonics 2610. Clamped at just over 1100 and we never had an issue unless it was clipped. 145.7 @ 34hz headrest/termlab sub up port back. Those subs sound very good and output is great for the price range. Ran sub for 1/2 a meca season (mod 2) and as a daily system then sold it. 870 should def be no sweat.

It should be fine. Just make sure to be extra careful when it comes to distortion. I have 700 to each of mine and they didn't sweat it at all
