Anyone who knows ports for box's help

alright i am happy with my system as of now and learned that my subs can have some good response and SQ to them with a big enough box. so now i wanna test out this possible 5 gain in db or so i've been told from porting the box. it is 4.5cuft which is big enough for my overdrive 12"s to be a ported box. so my question is can anyone help me out with how big of a port i should make?? slot ported or just ported?? and all that good stuff seeing as how i have never worked with a ported box. thank you in advance.
