anyone made their own beer?

My dad used to make his own beer. He got into it pretty big. He got to the point where the only thing he was buying from the store was the yeast. He got malting barley from a friend and hops from an uncle that lives in Washington state. He would sprout, dry, and crack the barley himself. He has notebooks he kept so he could tell what he had done from start to finish on each batch. By the time he finished he was making about 15 gallons at a time and putting it in 5 gallon pop kegs. It can be a pretty in depth process if you want to make it that way. It usually turned out pretty good.

Good Luck!

I have a Mr Beer, used it twice years ago and then never used it again

I get $3 cases of beer so it really isn't worth my time

When is the last time you drank a 12 pack+ of soda in a night? That is one of the main reasons why beer makes you fat;)

thats true:D

A couple English friends of my family made their own beer from scratch. It was really dark but lets just say my family still has the 5 from the 6-pack the gave us the first time.

There are good kits and not so good kits. Firstly, here are a few pointers for those of you who are planning to start things out:

- Be patient, don't panic, stay cool

- Whatever kit you get, throw out the instructions and yeast that comes with it

- You make the wort (pre-beer), yeast makes the beer

- Find a brewing supplier and seek out a fresh, alternate yeast and some liquid or dry malt extract (light) to add to your kit

- The person at the brew supply store is probably one of the friendliest guys you'll ever meet. Ask questions and get answers

- If the kits are called "lager" they are lying. All kits are ales

- Water makes up 90% of what it is you drink - use good tasting water

- Sanitation is key

- Mr. Beer is poop

I started a thread over at SSA about my last brew session. Its based on all grain brewing which is not something you need to get into:

If you have questions about brewing, I'm willing to answer them.

Best,

Mark
