Anyone here attended ground school?

I signed up for flight classes and I start ground school next month... I'm totally psyched, I've always wanted to learn to fly and I have a pretty nice opportunity where I'm at. I have question though, how hard is the FAA written exam? About how much do you pay for hours solo and accompanied? I'm thinking after I get the ground cert I'll try to start squeezing in a few hours every month. I believe here is about $65 solo and $75 with an instructor, I know this is a good deal but what is the average cost per hour in the states?

I just want to know if I should go ahead and fork over the few thousand to get all my hours while I can or if I can try to spread it out and keep a little money in my bank account.

It costs a ton of money, one of my friends has been learning to be a pilot for some time now. He's going to OK St. for aeronautical engineering then coming back to finish up all his classes to become a commercial pilot.
