I always thought that'd be a cool job to just snoop around stores and catch shoplifters.

What's the pay like for that job?

And how long do surveillance tapes stay on record? I was thinking about that too wouldn't they run out of spaces on their computers or something if those cameras are on all day?

Well I know someone that used to about 10 years ago. He told me he was making like 12-14 an hour but he liked the job. And the tapes stay on "file" anywhere from 24-72 hours. But this can vary between stores, people just dont review tapes all day and look for someone stealing something.

I actually had a buddy of mine that worked for the state of illinois corpreate (sp) wal-mart then he would go thru-out the state and try shop lifting and if he got away with stuff he brought it back in and told the managers and they got some kind of fine.

I have worked in IT for a few retail chains and I can tell you most places have upgraded to using computers that they burn nightly/weekly and save as long as they want. I know the place I am at now they still have all the tapes from 2004 when they upgraded from old VHS > Computer/CDR.

I can tell you I would not want that job, at least in the city they deal with some shit and they have this wall will all the 'known' shoplifters and another wall with those that have different diseases HIV/AIDS etc.. Could not pay me enough to wrestle around with some AIDS infected basehead.

I had those loss prevention guys about last week at the grocery store I work at.

One guy was wearing a long black trench coat and the others, g-unit shirts and baggy jeans. I had this customer that I had a hard time checking out at the checkstand because she was lying to me and her food stamps wouldn't cover hot food items, turns out she messed up and put the cold sandwich (which food stamps do cover) into her purse and accidently left the hot one out. If she would've done it right, she would've been able to purchase all her items, including the cold sandwich and pay the difference for the bottle of vodka she had on the side. The lady from loss prevention had her take out the sandwich out of her purse right their in front of everyone, then she was all like, i don't want to waste time having to write up the report and the thief lady said "i'll just take the vodka" and we had to put back all the rest of her items, after having to get an override from the manager since the computer was already half way through the order.
