anybody know the real rating on the Alpine type-r subs?

I am running a single Type R dual 4 ohm with a Hifonics BX1500D wired to 2 ohms. Have been running it like this since the beginning of August, and I actually think it could take more becuase it takes the Hifonics without sweating.

Thermally, I have found that Type Rs can take near double their RMS(300watts) no problem. This would obviously be in a small sealed box only though.

IMO a little bigger is better than a little smaller for sealed boxes.

Bigger box:

-More efficient (a good thing)

-Better low end extension (plays lower bass with more authority)

-smoother overall response

Smaller box

-less efficient

-more powerhandling (not really a good thing, why would you want to send more power to get the same volume?)

-Peakier response in the higher bass around 50-70hz

-Less low end extension

If you have the room, make yourself a bigger box.

make it easy on your self. send it 400 watts in the box alpine reccomends...unless you wanna use a program that will show you cone excursion depending on box and power and all that good stuff and design your own box...which is what i reccomend but hey, thats just me

they can handle a lot. my friends and i have sent a dual 4 1200rms from my jbl1200.1 and it held up to some major poundage. not to say that they didnt stink like hell afterwards, but they lasted for at least the minute that we beat the crap outta them

so u think i should get a bigger amp?
You should be fine with your current amp. Just build a box that is around the manufacturers recommended size and the 500w youll be giving each will be perfect. To spend money and go through the hassle of selling your amp for less than 200w more to each sub would be a waste and barely noticeable if you build the right box imo.

I got a single 12 type R. Got it wired at 1 ohm to a Hifonics BX1000D. Gain is at a little less then half. (probably on the lowside , I only got like 2.5 volts preout i think.)

I have it in a 2^3 box tuned to 30Hz. I haven't blown it yet. Eventually I'm planning on setting my gains with a multimeter to give it full a 1kw or as close as the amp can do, if it blows I'll get an RE SX.

youll blow it soon, i BLEW UP my alpine type r with a rockford 1001bd 1000w RMS @2 ohms and 1cuft sealed box, i could only have that baby on quarter gain. one day i wasent paying attention and had it on 3/4 gain and my friend was liek dude whats that smell. it was too late fryed that baby right up...that thing hit HARD too

I'm starting to think that the Hifonics is under rated. I've been running it like this for a couple of months and the sub doesn't even start to smell bad, which I've heard from a number of people that it will at high power.

My Hifonics is refurbushed (sp?) It works ok, except that the logo doesn't light up. I'm gonna stick a multimeter on it just to check, but I'm 99% sure I wired it at 1 ohms. (had 4 at first, but couldn't resist when I saw how little it moved.)

Maybe I'll sell them both. I keep looking at those modded MTXs, but I don't know if an SX cound handle one.

Yep, Getting my car fixed this weekend (stupid cottman transmission, should have fixed it right the first time) and that will decide whether or not I upgrade this cars alt or just but a new car. I got a 94 ford tempo, its only got like 70000 miles, had 40k when i got it about a year ago. Its a roomy car, that and it being paid for are its two strong points.

I keep looking at the Mitsu Galants tho. Insurance it too expensive when your 20. I'm looking at like 350 a month for most any car. Bastards. Motorcycle accidents shouldn't count, I don't even have one anymore.
