Anybody know of any free box designing programs?

i use a few different tools....

first is winISD... great program for finding how certain aspects of your design will change your slope..

second, i use this a box tuning calculator, that helps complete some of the math faster (hit me up if you want a copy, as it wont let me attach it here)

and finally, google sketchup is a great program for the actual visual design of the enclosure, as well as producing cut out sheets.

and as far as tips for designing.... practice practice practice.... so much too it, it's really hard to put it in a single post.

Figuring out enclosure size, shape, position, port area, tuning, and how it will work in the application is much more then just a few programs. I had create a few "custom" programs to work with everything I needed/wanted to know when designing.

However, for the basics...

Most people go by manufacturer specs for volume, then adjust the port area and tuning until they think they will get the output they want from the design.

Most use winisd, which is pretty good program. However, one thing to note about it is that, it does not take any acoustical properties of your vehicle into account. Meaning how it looks in the graph is not exactly how it will perform in the car itself. As long as you remember that and expect to the sound to be a little different then graphed you will be fine.

Beside that, most people are not into it enough to worry about car acoustics and such, they just want loud bass and that is it. For the most part that can be done with basic designs/builds.

Some extra info...

Simple things will affect how the enclosure will perform in the application. Something as simple as where the driver is mounted on the baffle will affect it. You can experiment with this, and find the results for your car if you want to build a few enclosures. Sub and port placements will play a huge roll in how the enclosure will sound(loud or "SQ").

I design my boxes in my head while standing in front of the panel saw at Home Depot.
That comes with time for most. I find that basic designs and some a little more complex I can do in my head with no issues..however, if it is for a customer I take no chances. If it is mine..meh...I'm to busy to do math/physics work.

Do you ever tip the cut guy an extra $20 to get the cuts right //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/confused.gif.e820e0216602db4765798ac39d28caa9.gif
If they ever got them right, I would. Lol. I usually slip em a fiver if it's more than two cuts. Or a little more if it's more than one sheet.
