Im planning my sub for home theater. Im considering doing a coffee table build with a sealed 12 down firing. Any suggestions? Anybody think this is a decent idea?

It was a way to save space and utilize a subwoofer, but most need to be placed in a corner. Wondering if downfiring sealed will need a specific placement like the others.

You dont get too much help with home audio on this forum.... I have made a few threads about it. They said tune low and build large enclosures. I think the coffee table idea is pretty cool. Just makes sure you dont have anything on there that is breakable.

Don't worry about putting your sub in a corner, the general rule of thumb is that you can put a sub anywhere in you room and it will do well, but a corner is optimal.

Thanks bro. I figured i wouldn't get too much from here but i'm not on any ht forums so i figured i would give it a try. I just remember reading somewhere that there's a gain when used in a corner placement. I'm only concerned about the wavelengths being too short when placed by the listener like the coffee table idea. Im using a custom TC Sounds LMS-r rebuilt to a lower FS and to be utilized in a sealed box. Box will be centered in the coffee table. 3cuft stuffed with poly fill and a 300w bash plate amp mounted on the bottom of the table. there will be shelves on each side and the whole coffee table will have isolation spikes on the bottom.

Lol. It will have isolation spikes and double 3/4" top.

I have heard it depends on the sub and conflicting views on sub placement. For my 12" front firing rear port It sounds best 2 feet off the wall with the sub firing at the wall and the port back towards the other wall 15 feet away. I put mine in over 20 spots and this is the best for me... But i love home audio.

I'm gunna be running my 18" Atomix Apocalypse X in a downfiring, double baffled, braced, 8 cubic foot box tuned at 28hz //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif Next up will be a 16hz box!

Had this back in my college days when there were no flat panel LCDs.

The small speakers are JBL Northridge series, the black towers are American Acoustics DS1010. Yep those are Eclipse Ti88150DVCs, Technics SA-DA10 receiver and behold... Proton D1200 amplifier to power the subs.

That Proton amp is the power powerful "100" watts per channel amp ever... more like 500 watts per channel.

I much prefer vintage Technics, but to each their own!

I believe I have heard of American Acoustics before...They sound white van, but I know they aren't.

Given their reputation, your power claim on the Proton is mostly attributable to it's massive headroom, correct?
