Sounds like you're getting it off centered when you tie it.

so what do we think the problem is then. when i'm pulling my tie around itself i'm pulling it too tight?

Pull more evenly across the tie as your pulling it down. Go nice and slow. Make sure it's centered before you tighten it as well.
