getting a rebuild kit for my escort and i called them and they dont know what it does at idle. they said its not a set amperage at idle. thats not how they build them. any suggestions on how to know if this is a good alt to get? i get about 6 people told m they loved theres but im still a little contraversial about it.

thanks guys!
They are correct when they said there is no set amperage at idle. It depends completely on the car, as different cars have different idle numbers etc. So its kinda going to be hard to tell without anyone having used them on a car that has similar idle numbers. Good luck with your findings though.

ok so thats normal for it to be "in the air" with there numbers. how would i test this after i buy it? will a DMM be able to tell me or do i need another meter? autozone?

autozone does not have a bench tester strong enough. You can send it to mechman to have it bench tested for free (or maybe a minimal fee). Im not exactly sure how to test it for max output on your own car. You will need to apply a large load on it though.

You can do it at home if you have a DC clamp meter and a large enough load to reach the idle amperage. (Brights, AC, Rear Defrost, etc or burping a high current amp)

right on, for example

say the alt claims around 200 amps at idle...put around 200 amps load to it at idle while clamping, and see what ya get. have someone set inside the car to ell you what rpms the engines at. good luck

im waitin for the money to come through my bank from paypal. but yes i have commited to it. i mean im having it rebuilt for free so its actually a brand new 200 amp alternator for 134 bucks. cant beat that.

does that mean you are or are not doing it yourself? sorry i got confused with the free part. i was strongly considering doing mine myself, but didn't quite know how extensive the operation was.

a buddy is doing it for me. he said its real easy to do. like 7 bolts and screws total on the whole tear apart. i will watch and learn for sure though

i gotcha. i was concerned when i heard somewhere about soldering involved. i feel fine soldering normally, but wasn't sure how exact this science with alternators was. i'm interested to hear how it goes for you. good luck.

Ive seen plenty of these cars with ten inch sub/ subs inverted/facing up and ported to the rear.. even a single 12

You have roughly 50 liters total, which will probably work with that sub.
