Any Computer Gurus Here? (semi-off topic)

I have never heard of the what you're describing (since you say it doesn't do it with the mp3's also)...I have had song pop, click, make wierd noises when I was doing other "memory intensive" things on my old computer at the same time I was burning music...that hasn't happened since I built my own Quad Core.

Are you making WMA's of CD's you actually own? Or are you downloading these files from the internet?

I have heard of instances where WMA has sometimes had a "protect" feature built into it just like the Apple Store has them built into their mp3's.

If you own these CD's and you have the ability to play mp3's whay are you set on WMA?

All I can suggest (since it seems like you went through almost every other step) is to burn these songs with mp3 (with a very high bitrate)...then convert to WMA and see if it still happens...or burn to some sort of lossless format first then to WMA.

I am taking store bought CD's and encoding them as WMA files onto my hard drive. My entire CD collection is already encoded in this format, so I am trying to avoid having to re-encode over 2000 songs to MP3. If I cannot solve this problem, they yes - that will have to be my last resort. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif

To add, I am using a 2.6GHz Pentium 4 with Hyper-threading and 1 gig of ram.

My problem can be found here:http://club.cdfreaks.com/f3/wma-disk-pops-cracks-238389/

I will be more than happy to provide more details, and if any of you can offer a solution, it would be very much appreciated. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif
any reason you don't just transcode to MP3, other than possible quality loss issues?

what version of WMA? possibly the player has issues with certain new or old versions, or certain options that are hidden from you in your default encoder.

But you only have the problem playing it in your car? What brand of CD's are you using...and what speed are you burning them at? I burn my mp3 cd's at nothing faster than 4x
I've tried using Dynex, Office Depot, Memorex, and Verbatim brand disks. I have also tried recording at speeds ranging from 4x all the way to 52x. I even switched to a different CD burner. I have also tried the disk on other Pioneer decks and the problem still occurs on the same files at the exact same time within the song.

*pulls out hair*

Well, my music collection is already encoded as WMA, and the HU is the only thing that makes these popping noises, so its a convenience/time issue at the moment. I have tried encoding the wma's at different qualities and switching from CBR to VBR, but none of that solved the problem. I have also tried this using WMP 10 and WMP 11.

could be a weird cd reader in the car, some have trouble reading cd-r's so it could just be that it has trouble reading the discs you use or the format they are in (cd-r).

Are you doing other thing while burning, my old PC if I did not just let it burn without doing anything on the PC would have similar issues with MP3's.

I would try ripping one again with only nero or whatever running then burn again without anything running in the background at the slowest speed your writer has.

Worth a shot.

the only difference between wma and mp3 is copyright protection. it would be in your best interest to transfer them to mp3. just make a 2k list to transfer and leave it alone for a day.

Thanks, but I had no success. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif

mdillion,

it's looking more and more like i'll have to do that. There will however be a very noticable difference in disk space if I switch to MP3. My deck can play WMA's using VBR, but it can only play MP3's that use CBR. The VBR wma's have a smaller file size with the same audible quality as the CBR mp3's, which is very helpful for putting my entire music collection on just a few CD-r's.

Well, it looks like I misread my HU's owners manual. It does not specifically state that VBR mp3's cannot be played, so i will have to give that a try. The only problem is that WMP doesn't have an option to encode mp3's using VBR. Nero sucks at finding the track titles for the disks I encode, and Winamp doesn't automatically separate the folders by Artist and Album names like WMP does. Any other software suggestions? (preferably free)

And to clarify, this WMA playback issue occurs on any Pioneer HU I've tried. Took it into Best Buy one day and tried them. Something has to be wrong on my end.
