amp draining battery even though hooked up correctly?

My battery dies and I jump it and go up and down the freeway a bit to get some juice to it. I get back and nothing happens when I try and start it.

The turn on lead is hooked up correctly and turns off when I turn my deck off. Is my amp still taking juice from the battery when the car is off or something?

Now I take my system out.

Do the same thing, get it jumped and run it up and down freeway and now it starts just fine Is my battery crap? I'm not really sure how old it is or anything. But does the system drain the battery when turned off still?

Yeah your probably right. I have no idea what the battery is or how old it is. There is a cover over it that covers everything but the top posts. Will have to get one here before spring.

take it up to auto zone have them test it. chances are your going to need a new one though

you can do this yourself. Crank up your vehicle, then take the red positive off of your battery. if your car dies then you know its your alternator.

Thats really not a very good way of testing it. And Other things do go wrong with Alternators. Like ALT has voltage output but is not producing any amps. Or Alt is sending out to much AC signal.

while this is true I have seen the method ive described work countless times. just a thought and something that is easy to try. your ALWAYS better off taking it to someone to be tested (autozone etc) but this is something you can try in a flash

Is it 2008 going on 2009.

Only thing you are really proving is that the battery can not keep up with the demands(voltage ,amperage) of the vehicles system. Not that the alternator is bad. Good charged battery or poor charged battery the car will die either way.

I can still have a good ALternator and good battery. Disconnect the alternator postive wire and the vehicle will die anyways(mabye not right off the bat but will die). What did a prove.

What Im getting at too. His battery is most likely shot. Wont hold a charge sounds like cell bad whatever has gone wrong has. Telling him to take the Alt wire off and see if car shuts off. Will not prove that the alt is bad. Just that the battery cant keep up with the demands of the vehicle witch most likely wont because its most likely a dead battery.

Take it to autozone or a shop. Ask them to run a few tests on the battery and ALT with car on and hooked up.

They'll ask you to turn everything off(stereo, interior lights, etc.), turn on the car, rev the engine to 2-3K RPM and possibly turn on your AC...

Just go in to the counter and ask for a battery and alternator check. It's free.
