Amp and Speakers with stock radio

Will running a amp. and new 6 1/2 in" speakers along with the stock radio give me superior sound over the stock sterio setup on my 2009 Colorado or do I need to replace the head unit also.

it will sound better but the quality coming from the HU won't be as good as an aftermarket one
