Always use polyfill?

I've been under the impression that filling the box with polyfill before putting the sub in was always the right thing to do. Do all of you guys fill yours?

My friend built a to-spec slot-ported box for his 10w3 and it sounded better in the same box without polyfill... //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/confused.gif.e820e0216602db4765798ac39d28caa9.gif

If you guys do use it, how do you keep it from blowing out the port/does it block the port significantly? How does one prevent this? (mine is an aeroport)

Thaaanks guyszz //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

Polyfill is supposed to be use for boxes that are small and need to become "larger". you wont notice any differences if you use it in a box thats built to spec lol. it works well in sealed enclosures

in a ported box I use the batt version not the stuffing version, just spray some contact cement to get it to adhere to the wall. polyfill only really helps when your speaker needs to be in a slightly larger enclosure but just don't have the space. example you have a sealed 12" sub but only have 1 cubic ft of space but the sub needs 1.2 cubic ft, polyfill fill that void.

Hmm okay thanks guys - so SSA says for the DCON 10 that, ported, it's 1 cube, 1.2 cubes optimal. Mine is 1 cube... Stho... throw polyfill in there? How much?

and what exactly is the batt version? Not the pillow version?

Just stuff some in there and see how it sounds. As the guys already stated it usually seems most useful in small sealed enclosures to make the sub feel like its in a larger box. I had the dual 12 box under my bench seat in my silverado and i noticed from the small boxes the subs were a little soft on the low end frequency. Granted w/ a shallow space i can only do so much, when i stuffed them with poly the JLs definately had a little more response on the low end. Not a incredible difference but definately worth the time and effort.

My CVXs played a lot deeper in their small sealed box when I filled it with polyfill. The box is 2.5 cubes net. My Type R box has no fill in it. It's already larger than what Alpine recommends for it. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif

BTW... I went to UW-Madison for a couple of years, fall of 05-spring of 07. Then I transferred home.

You can pick it up at Walmart for like $3 for 16 ounces. The stuffing version is a bag of stuffing. Its like a giant cotton ball. The batting version is in sheets that doesnt come apart. You line the walls with it.

There is an article around the web with a chart that shows the maximum amount of gain you can get from using poly fill. I believe it was a 35% gain from using it.

Id always use it knowing what I know now. It helps smooth out the frequency response in any given situation ported and sealed.
