Alternators

Anybody out there knows if upgrading my alternator would help me more than getting a cap. I have a cutlass ciera 1990 with 2 sony xplod 1200 watt amps each of them with a sony 1200w sub bridged to each of them, and a pioneer amp on my highs.

In all honesty, yes. Don't get a cap. Just don't. Here's a fair warning, don't be cocky, or people will flame.

one more question how many watts can you push past the rms of a sub before it blows

It depends on the sub. I prob wouldnt put too much more than rms to the xplods, but then again I dont think your amps are putting out what they are rated it at.

A decent battery and your stock alt should be fine for those amps. They say "1200 watt" on the front? Maybe 300RMS each.

120A will get you by with a 1200watt stereo, i say look into a 160A or up for the future, you sound like you have potential

yeah they are 500 rms bridged@ 4ohms but at night my lights dim.

i'd get the biggest alt that you can afford, id hate to buy an amp now and still have dimming/voltage drops later

I kinda been doin my homework on car audio the only reason i have the system i have because i gotten the whole system for dirt cheap and people who dont know car audio will think im hittin hard. In the future i plan on selling everything and upgrading. but for right now ima ride with the sonys

Yeah it is addicting and it has help me understand alot about car audio. With a little help from the forums i've hooked up my own system sure its not professional but its a clean job.
