Alt opinion (EA vs Powermaster)

So, I currently run an Excessive Amperage 200a alt. I've had no real problems with it at all for 2+ years now. The only issue is at idle in drive. It seems like it just shuts off and I have to keep on the pedal to keep voltage. Not a huge issue, as I'm not a douchesicle that beats at lights. Still annoying though. I just found a fucking SWEET deal on a 200a Powermaster almost BNIB. Would it be worth the coin to get this alt over what I already have? I hear good things about Powermaster, but I don't want to spend cash on something that won't fix the only issue I have with an otherwise properly working alt of the same rating. What do the collective CA brainz think?

EA has good customer service and his alt do give out what they say they do! //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif Nate is a cool guy man!

Sorry man seem like an engine issue checked the alt belt and your idle may need to adjust either one or both
negative. with stock alt all is good. this is also the smallest pulley EA offers. idle is controlled by the PCM

Not worth $200 IMO. I'd either save a few more bucks and get something in the 250A/270A if they're available for your car or wait till your current alt dies. I understand it ***** when it just stops like that but if it's not causing driving issues, I think it's hard to justify extra money on the same power.

what? all i want to know is if the powermaster would put down more power than the EA at low RPMs.

the belt is not the issue. it's not slipping/squealing. the rpms can not be changed (the PCM will fix it). it's the fact that the EA alt does not perform at ~650 RPM (engine RPM). if i run the stock alt, there is no problem. stock is 130a. the car's load doesn't change based on the alternator. the load is consistent.

not $200 //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/sneaky.gif.7189749b3a3f769e8815b47e8ae87f88.gif

where did you get that from?

the powermaster alts ive seen do "rated" power at "hwy speed" which they consider 7500 rpms. and the few that i've looked do 1/2 rated output or less at 2500 rpms if that helps answer ur question. These were the actual test results of a couple powermasters that i was looking into back a while back, maybe they are better now.

Its is a 200 but the birth certificate that came with it said it was putting out 250 and when i had it tested it said it was putting out 260amp.
i'm pretty sure this EA has an on/off RPM point. curious if the PM is the same. i had my EA tested and it's putting down close to 250 @ speed. thats not where the issue is though. it's really a non-issue. i'm just trying to justify buying this alt at this crazy price. lol. but only if it will fix the problem of course.

Strange Im having the same problem with my EA. I'm currently contemplating rebuilding it with parts from this company.

High Output Alternators - Alternator Parts - Starter Parts - Repair kits

does yours just shut off too? shits ghey //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/fyi.gif.9f1f679348da7204ce960cfc74bca8e0.gif if i go any smaller on the pulley it'll be just the bolt.

It's hard to say if the powermaster will solve your idle problem.

I have an EA in my truck and I had to set my idle speed slightly higher to keep it on when I'm at stop lights. Not really a big deal, IMO.

I'd try to contact powermaster as see what the turn-on point is for their alts are and compare that to your idle RPM speed. That will give you a good indication if it's going to turn on at idle in your car.

This isn't really a defect with the alternator, just a side effect of wanting more output higher up in the RPM range. Though I think most manufacturers have gotten around that issue nowadays, though I can't directly comment on any specific brand.

how the hell can i figure out the actual shaft RPM of the alt? that's what i need to be comparing...
You need to measure the pulley sizes, divide those numbers, and multiply that by the engine RPM. (i think)

So say you have a 6" crank pulley and a 2" alternator pulley. 6/2=3, so multiply your engine RPM's by 3.

I'm guessing here but I'm pretty sure that's it.

EDIT: Yep, confirmed.
