Alpine Type-R question?

Hey, I have Two 12" Alpine Type-Rs and people keep telling me to put them in a big box and port them. I currently have them sealed at .85 airspace like Alpine recommends. Are they really that much better ported? My old Kenwood 12s (KFC-W3011) were louder sealed then my alpines. I feel like somethings wrong. I would have expected the alpines to be louder.

I would just go with a ported box tuned from 32 hz. - 35 hz.
