Alpine h701 processor

How much difference will you notice
Depends on what you are using for processing now, and how much of the H701's processing you will be utilizing.

If you are going from very little processing to an H701, and utilize most of it's features, it has the potential to really increase the performance of your stereo tremendously. Great EQ and xover features, time alignment will make a big difference if you need it and don't have it, etc.

and how hard is it to tune?
It's very easy to manuvear through the H701's features via the C701 I have.

As for tuning the stereo itself, that takes some time. It always does, if you want to do it properly.

yea the h701 is a great piece of equipment. if you know how to tune, it'll significantly increase the quality of your system.

ey squeak, what HU are you using with your combo? using optical out?

I have a Coustic CD-325 that I'm presently using. It's an older deck, but it has coaxial digital output which is the reason I bought it, then I have a coax to toslink convertor. But thus far, I haven't been able to get the coaxial output to work //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif So I'm probably going get rid of it, sell my C701 and grab a 9860.

9860 is supposed to be a bigger pain in the butt to control the H701 with, but after having the C701 for a while, I'd really prefer to be able to control everything through the source unit and not have the excess controller.

yea i just got the h701 and was thinking of using just pure rca's but i've been reading that the h701 is notorious for floor noise with analog. so i'm looking at for an hu with optical out, plus the guy i bought it off threw in the optical cable for free //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif. i've also heard tuning from the 9860/9861 is a PITA, is it as bad as people say? also if you sell i might be interested in the c701 //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/naughty.gif.94359f346c0f1259df8038d60b41863e.gif.

Edit: you answered my question.

Yup.

I, however, have not noticed any noise floor on mine and I'm presently using the analog inputs.

So, it's sort of a hit or miss thing.

But I'd still really like to run digi in //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

Depends on who you ask. I've never used it....but from the people I've talked to, it's confusing as hell the first couple times, but after you really learn and remember how to access the features and such, it's not really that bad.

Sounds like there's just a high learning curve involved with it. But once you get it down, it's not that bad anymore.

also if you sell i might be interested in the c701

yea reading the alpine manual, it doesn't seem to bad tuning from the 9860/9861. i dont mind learning. and i agree with you that i'd like to run everything from the HU and not having to hide the c701 but we'll see

A little off topic, but are the A/V HU the only HU's that allow you to fully opperate the h701? What about the none video HU's, like the 9857, 9861, etc.?

The "lowest" unit (and the only one without a screen) that will control the H701 is the Alpine 9860 (the 9861 in the new lineup).

After ordering the H701 over a month ago to go with my W200, it finally came in last week and I got it put in over the weekend. I started playing with it last night, and it's FABULOUS. I'm using the optical connection. To me, everything is very simple to use via the W200. Well, everything up to and including the graphic equalizer. I love that you can save your settings to memory. Small note - Make sure you understand how to do that. You have to hit the Memory button and then the number of the location. The first couple of times after spending several minutes adjusting the crossovers and eq, I mashed and held the numered location, trying to save it, only to realize that I had undone everything. I haven't even started to screw with the parametric eq yet. But anyway - the function and flexibility of this thing is enormous, and it's about as easily mapped out as it could possibly be for everything it does.

For me, this piece was a must have. None of my amps have built-in crossovers, and obviously the W200 does not either. Even if I upgraded amps to have crossovers, I would still want this unit for the precise control it offers, all from the touch screen head unit.

I just added the 701, amps and speakers to my W200. Of course, it was a HUGE step up in sound, but that's the amps and speakers, too.

The UI for controlling the 701 from the W200 is very easy to use. But, it seems to be just a little flaky. Sometimes, certain settings seem to get lost when I tweak them and then hit one of my preset buttons to go back to a saved config. Plus, the memory presets don't save any of the settings that are part of the W200's built-in audio control (i.e. fade, balance and sub level).

Also, jluv, you should know you can use the Graphic EQ OR the Parametric EQ, but not both. It's either/or.

If you're going to run an active config, I'd definitely recommend adding the 701 to the W200. If you're going to stick with one amp driving a passive crossover to your components, then I'm not sure I'd bother, 'cause then you can't really take advantage of the time alignment feature - unless you mounted your component tweeters right next to your component woofers.

Bottom line: if your setup is already tuned and giving you a flat response curve, then there's not a lot of point in adding the 701. OTOH, if there's some adjustments you want to make (like time alignment) that you can't make with your current setup, then the 701 is a great way to get there.
