Helping a friend with his dimmer trigger. He's got an 87 Toyota pickup with an Alpine 9862 and we're not sure which wire to use on the wiring harness for the trigger as it has both a positive and negative trigger wire. What does the Alpine want to see? Thanks guys.

What colors are the wires? If I remember right one should be orange with a white stripe and the harness should have just plain orange.
Yeah, the harness has both an orange with white (positive trigger) and an orange with black (negative trigger), and the Alpine simply has an orange as you said.

Does he want the dimmer to function with the lights on his vehicle? If so there may be an issue. Ive been reading around regarding this and some say the negative needs to be grounded to get it to work, but I havent seen any confirmation.

Ive also read that most after market HU's dont dim like the standard OEM radios. They have 2 settings, full bright or dim and there is no in between. They dont dim or get brighter as you dim or brighten the gauge clusters.

He basically just wants the display to dim some when he turns on his lights. Too bright at night, lol. I just didn't want to potentially hurt the head by feeding it the wrong trigger.

Dim sum.

lulz

Ok you may have to do it from the HU internal settings.

Not sure I understand. You mean instead of using the trigger?
There are settings in the HU that let you set the display brightness. Almost none of the HU's allow you to dim the HU with the interior dimmer that corresponds to the vehicles gauge cluster, controls, etc. The orange wire will still go to the orange and white wire unless his vehicle has a wire for both. If thats the case then just wire them accordingly.

Yeah, I don't hink he's concerned with any of that. As long as there's a difference between turning his headlights on and off, he'll be happy. Thanks again.
