This thing is cheap especially, especially since it is in crutchfield, the question is - Is it any good for a good system?

I haven't heard much, or seen much of aiwa in car audio, but I have had experience with them in home audio and they make pretty good stereo receivers, I'd probably look into some different brands for a HU though, I think home audio is what they specialize in

I am running that same deck in my wifes car.

It works well and has given us no problems.

It is set up with the RCA's set to sub output (its switchable from rear to sub) connected to an amp and sub.

It is also running 4 coaxials off of its internal amp.

Draw backs-

It has no high pass filters for front and rear, just a low pass for the sub.

When using any of the EQ settings the internal amp starts to distort at 20 out of 35 on the volume knob, with the EQ off it will go up to 27 clearly.

The single RCA preout limits your amp options, if you switch it to rear and use rca splitters you can run more amps off of it but lose the ability to control the sub from the HU.

I would not recommend it for a high performance system just a basic beater system.

For a cheap HU that will give you all the options of the expensive decks and cost under 200 bucks I recommend this-

Worth every penny with 4volt front/rear/sub preouts, remote, 3 band EQ, front/rear/sub crossovers, ect,ect

It will let you do everything you want and I thought it sounded cleaner then the Aiwa.

I've never owned an Aiwa deck myself but have experienced a few that friends have had. For the money they seem to be built solidly and are worth the asking price. The Aiwa units I've seen in use were applied a couple of different ways - one was driving coaxials off deck power backed by an amped sub, such as stones was talking about in his wife's ride. Another was driving OEM speakers and nothing else. A third was the source unit for amped components alon with a pair of amped subs. Did any of these setups have great SQ? No. Did they sound like they were worth the owner's investment? Yes. That being said...

I was reading the specs for this deck on Crutchfield's site...

I find some of them a bit incredulous, to say the least. 120dB CD S/N ratio and 9dBf FM mono sensitivity on a $100 deck? If those ratings are real that's pretty impressive.

For a system that will never be built beyond budget it should do fine. But if you have aspirations that your setup might get fairly involved in the future I wouldn't head it with that deck.

thanks guys and stone for the help. i think i am going to have to spend a little more money anyways. i dont want to get 2500+ into speakers and amps just to have a cheap head unit. i will eventually worry about other speakers besides the subs
