Air vent in trunk?

So today I noticed water in my trunk? It was an air vent in my trunk on the pass. side. I have a 2000 alero, I pulled it and sealed it with silicone and the water is still coming in. My plan is to get rid of the vent. Why is it there, and can I just eliminate it?

Then it should be better if I get rid of it right, more pressure in the cabin? It seems like there is no real use for this, I am not sure why it is there, but tomorrow I will be filling it in unless safety is an issue. I thought the same thing, but in my rear deck is a huge hole plus a few more. and the seal from the back seats to the trunk has many gaps. So I believe it is something other than pressure and if its not a safety issue, great problem solved.

It also helps your heat and A/C flow through car better. Helps trunk shut more easily. Allows moisture to exit the car. Some cars gain by sealing them off and some cars lose by sealing them off. I would also check your tail lights. That is where the leak was in my car.

This ^^^ Without a vent your cabin will pressurize and air circulation from your heat / ac will suffer. Not worth it IMO.

And if your Alero has a power moonroof, you may be seeing water in the trunk because of clogged drains.
