A new "top dog"?

waste of materials and time... no need for that amount of excursion, it takes stupid power levels to reach those excursion levels...

its been proven time and time again with most sealed enclosures 30mm xmax you need 3k+

many woofers with 25mmm are excessive in there ideal applications...

no doubt great designs i just think its more marketing than anything....

reversing winding direction has little advantage quite frankly.. adding a shorting ring is a better way to lower inductance and back EMF... inductance will never be at zero simply because a voice coil IS and inductor.... it does lower inductance from reversing current flow but there are more side affects than simply lowering inductance..

simply put with such huge coils inductance is very hard to avoid, being the reason XBL is superior in this sense, but the design does have its cons, it has the lowest power handling per xmax(using the coil rations dan has used in the past) as well as lower B/l this is of course the trade off from lower inductance(which in the first place really isn't a big deal at the output levels the woofers achieve)... simply put i wish they would offer alignments that paid more attention to QMS VAS and MMS as many of there woofers sound terrible in high output boxes... i have seen all to many setups sound just as good cost less and use less power, did i mention have the same loudness?

^ I'd say it's a safe bet that most people looking for uber subs will have at least 3kw to throw at them.... and no doubt a sub like that could take a tremendous amount of burst power.....

If you don't have or want 5-10kw to throw at a sub like that... then buy something smaller....

At any rate... there is an obvious downside to using a counter coil... which is probably why few companies incorporate them into their designs..... and seeing as how this sub is so far only a concept, I won't be holding my breath for it's actual release...

I had my AV12 reach mechanical limits on a 450rms amp in a 1.25 sealed enclosure playing a 35hz tone. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/fyi.gif.9f1f679348da7204ce960cfc74bca8e0.gif

The big deal with this sub is it is a home sub... many folks will use them IB in an attic or a similar setting. With a big room and multiple kilowatts on tap it'll get moving nicely //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

The thing to note about Dan's post is that the XBL^2 counter-coil is placed in the rebate of the pole piece. Any other topology has to put the counter-coil somewhere else besides one of the rebates. Placing it somewhere else besides the rebates (like Neil stated early in the DIYMA discussion) is typically on the VC former, which adds weight.
Dan stated multiple times that you would not want the counter coil on the former....from the way he presented it, I would presume this to mean for any topology you want it on the pole.

Well, if the counter coil moves with the former, then what is it doing to the dynamic field of the voice coil? Shorting it out all over. You want to act like a shorting ring, eliminating eddy currents and stabilizing flux in the steel - you want the counter coil fixed.
