Looking to get a new h/u. Which one should I get? I'm not looking for amazing sq or anything. It looks like the 9886 right now. It's time to replace the sony.

active as in amped front stage?

Active means each speaker is receiving power from a channel on your amp and the h/u is doing the processing. There are no passive crossovers involved like a normal component set.

I vote 9887. Reason being is that I started out with the 9885 versus the 9887 and now I am wishing I had gone with the 9887 because my system grew more than I had initially planned!

When the 9886 first came out, the 9885 had better IPOD controls. IIRC, the 9886 would choke on songs over x (somewhere in the 1,500 or 2,000 range). I have over 3,000 songs on my 80 Gigabyte IPOD classic, and will probably put more on my 120 Gig Ipod. I have a 9885 in each car, and thus far I have been happy with the head units... I just wish I had gone with a 9887 in each car for the better built-in crossover.

Hm well I've got the 9887 and I've yet to really use it, but if it does mess up then I'm sure I'll notice with with my 4.5k songs on my ipod

I didn't think the 9887 had that problem and I believe a firmware update fixed that for the 9886.
