ok since i guess i never noticed a thread about it and i keep reading about the catastrophe, i just wanna say that my heart goes out to all those families and children in the indian sea. with death tolls nearing 25,000, that's probably one of the worst natural disasters in the last couple decades (with the exception of devastating earthquakes in the middle east) but unprecedented for our time when considering it was tsunamis that killed most of the people, not just shoddy building collapsing and what not. of course i dont have kids but i don't know what i'd do if i witnessed all my children being swept to sea while playing on the beach as most of the casualties were children who were either on the beach that sunday or working in fisheries (hence their inability to escape the walls of water).

*flag at half mast*

I was just about to start a thread on this. One of my good friends from college left just after finals to return home to Sri Lanka for Christmas. I hope he's ok. It was the 4th largest earthquake ever recorded (since they started in 1899). The wave was so big that it hit the north coast of Sri Lanka and caused water damage on the capital near the southern coast, which is about 250 miles away. It almost seems like something out of a movie.

now it's at 55,000. the reason for the big jump is because they JUST arrived at the islands closest to the epicenter, and as you can see those few islands make up for nearly half the casualties. they're saying how some islands were hit so hard that 2/3 of the population disappeared.

It's such a sad thing that so many people will never get to confirm the deaths of their family memebers. I've heard counts at over 70,000 dead and estimates that may have a final tally at over a 100,000. I'm a poor college student but this makes me want to donate some of the money I got from christmas to help these people.

The most horrific part is yet to come.... the massive spread of disease in the region. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif

yep, plus their water supply will must likely become contaminated and their will be a shortage of food, and the whole area will be completely broke from damages and loss of busnises(sp?) the death toll from the may not be know for another 5 years and even then, those who had no family or records and were swept to sea will never be counted unless their bodies are found, in which cause they will only be a number //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif

well the count is at 77,000, again horrid news. i saw some footage on cnn that made my skin want to crawl. not just towns leveled to the ground, but sraight up BODIES and arms and shit hanging out of the trees and what not. there were also hundreds (maybe thousands) of bodies being shown just floating around in the ocean, truly morbid. i can't even imagine some deep impact sh!t happening for real. guess we'll just stick around and stay updated. and yea, this event makes 9/11 look like a day at disneyland
