600 watt amp for a 300 watt sub?

1st off, yes I'm a noob. I'm pretty sure I'm going to get an infinity reference 1252w (300w RMS) for cheap. So I'm looking for an amp for it and I see that I can get an Eclipse xa1200 (600w RMS) for $130. I know it's good to have a more powerful amp but is 300 watts more too much even if I keep the gain down? Or can someone recommend a good amp for cheaper?
