6.5" comps. with punchy midbass <$250?

I currently have Polk db6500's in the doors of my Accord deadened with 2 layers of eDead v1² (the newer butyl based stuff). They have about 200w rms @ 4ohm to each, which is a bit much for their 100w rms/300w peak rating. Subs are 2 ID8v3's mounted IB in the rear deck with about 240w rms to each, low pass is set at around 90Hz.

Can I improve the front stage much by spending around $250 (or less preferably //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif )? I'm not feeling as much punch as I'd like from the db6500's. I'd like stronger midbass with a lot of punch and smooth highs even when loud, while retaining overall good SQ for what I'm spending. I listen to some of everything. They should also be 6.5" 4ohm components that can handle about 150-200w rms. Any idea's?

you can usually overpower most speakers with a clean signal quite a bit

i had my t500.2 on my 65watt rms kicker ks's which did 234W per channel @ 4-ohms

Cerwin Vega V-max 65 or Crystal SSCS... drop your high pass crossover lower than normal, say around 60 HZ.

OK I will throw out the 720PRS the mids like the pwr and from everything I have seen are awsome. The CDT and Crystals are a good choice for the price.

Rainbows are always a good choice not sure you are going to find anything for 250.00.

The midbass seems to drop out some, the punch from drums etc seems like it should be stronger at high levels (and lower levels for that matter). Maybe this is because of their limited excursion? I can't find their Xmax listed anywhere but it dosen't look like much. The install is partially to blame. I plan on improving that too, mainly adding more deadener and an MDF mounting plate probably with modeling clay.

I've read alot of good things about the 720PRS but they're rated at only 50rms, I'd be concerned about distortion at higher levels and breaking them too :/ .

Right now I'm considering:

CDT's EF line, they seem to have the power handling but mixed reviews on their midbass and SQ for the money. EF-61FG/TW25 maybe.

Rainbow SLX 265 Deluxe - Dream Line 6-1/2" Component Set for about $200, 100rms/150peak

Crystal Mobile Sound SSCS-6 - 100rms/200peak

How does the midbass compare for those 3? Though I wonder if the Rainbow's or Crystals will be able to handle as much power as the CDT EF's, or at least be as loud as the Polk 6500's with better SQ and midbass.

Check out JBL c608GTi comps on ebay. They impressed me a few years ago. They will make some insane mid bass. Your teeth are going to buzz if you feed them with 200Wx2 //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/yumyum.gif.0556df42231b304b9c995aefd13928a8.gif

If you want to see if the 720PRS can really handle and how good people are really saying they are check out the link. 50watts won't get these things running properly IMO. People are running 150 each side in active set-up and 320 a set in some passives. There are way under rated on what they need to run. For the price these are dam near unstoppable-IMHO

If I was going dreamline though the Rainbow SLX 265 Deluxe would be my pick. The Germ would be really nice but over your budget but then you get the Cal25.

Price I have seen on others are, not saying you or I can get them at this price but I could be wrong IMO-

I'd rather spend less than $250 for now. I've already dumped more cash into this then I intended, I'm becoming a little obsessed with it //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif . If theres something around $250 that is almost night and day different from something around $160 I might do it.

Right now the Crystal SSCS's are looking good (saw them for $160) but I'm concerned about their titanium tweeter maybe sounding too harsh at higher levels. I generally prefer smoother highs. Most people say silks tend to be smoother and some have mentioned that's not always the case. Some also have said silks tend to break up more at higher levels? The db6500 silks did seem to break up some at high levels with cymbals and the like (with the 200RMS I had into them). Either way I haven't found anyone calling the Crystals harsh though, at any volume level.

As much as I would like to say there is night and day dif, I don't think there is. So if money is a concern I would go for the Crystals. There are very nice and have a good sound. You would be good with the pwr you have also. IMO-I would say they are a lot better than your Polk db.

- Very generally, metal tweeters usually have extended response... many soft domes roll off earlier. Metal tweeters can sometimes have more detail and handle complex musical signals better. If the quality of your install and speaker placement is not terrific, soft domes can be more forgiving.

This all varies widely between different tweeter models, however.

If you give the crystals 200w a side, mount them on an mdf ring on the door itself (not the panel) and deaden your doors, cross them @ 80hz. You WILL have the midbass you want and more.
