5 speed kicking out of gear by itself

Yep... only wants to do it when im driving highway it seems. Coming home last weekend from latrobe had it in 5th just cruisin and BAM kicks out of gear and revs real high. I pushed it back in, and it did it like 4 more times on the way home (100 mile trip). Ive been driving it around but wont seem to do it anymore so i kinda forgot about it until yesterday driving back to latrobe again to see my girl, it started again. I just simply kept my hand on the stick the whole ride and could feel it wiggle around every once in awhile but it stayed in gear. Only problem.... i have no idea why this would happen? It doesnt seem to do it if i punch the gas or change anything dramatically... it just does it on random. Any help with this?

"roastin' my honda's ass right off the production line?" i don't think so..//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/rolleyes.gif.c1fef805e9d1464d377451cd5bc18bfb.gif especially not in my SI.....

you dont have an si so sit down and shut up...

my sisters ex boyfriend had an avenger and his use to do that but i never heard ewhat te final diagnosis was

syncros might be going. I drove one of those a while ago and it did that when letting out of the gas. There might have been something keeping it from going all the way into gear and now its out of the way, internal.

Well the clutch plate im guessing no, clutch died in my s10 and it never kicked out of gear like this, it was just like...once i stopped moving... it just didnt wanna go anymore. I dont know though- if i knew i wouldnt be here completely clueless. Just dont want to take it to a shop and get raped if i dont have to

tell ya right now its not the clutch, the one who said that is a retard, i wont even go into detail...

what it actually sounds like is internal issues with the transmission, specifically we're talkin about synchros, as well as the detents and interlocks.... see what basically the job of a synchro is to match up shaft speeds while changing gears so as to make the upshift smooth, usually the most common issues with worn/failing synchros would be grinding. detents and interlocks are basically what are used to keep the trans in the gear which you have selected, that is more than likely the issue. now there could be some variance, i could go into more detail or possibilities but bottom line is, do a quick check on both ends of your linkage just to make sure there isnt any play there (slight possibility) and then pretty much what you're left with is the trans needs to come out, and it needs to be gone thru... maybe not an all out rebuild but once its out and apart, it'll probably be worth it just to go ahead and check for proper wear on all the dog teeth, change out the synchros, all the bearings, etc. take it to a transmission specialist, they'll be able to help you.

It did it again on my way to an interview... wow.... so you think thats gonna be expensive? I was thinking of selling the car....

This doesnt sound good at all.... Get rid of it before it gets worse? Im looking to get a bike and i found a nice $500 beater up the road, so if i sold the avenger i could put a nice downpayment on a new bike. Its only gonna get worse from here right?

Big question... is it just gonna pop and be done? i dont want a car dropping a tranny when im 100 miles away at my girlfriends house....

yeah pretty much its not going to get any better, the down the road problems might just be that it pops out of gear all the time, never wants to stay in unless you're holding the shifter... if it caused wear with the 4-5 synchro you'll have trouble getting it into gear and it will grind as it goes in. it might not be a bad idea to sell it, but its not a horrible problem thats going to blow up your trans and leave you stranded, all its really going to do worst case scenario is prevent usage of that gear, and being that its 5th, it wouldnt be hard to make it wherever you need to go if you lose the ability to shift to 5th.
